TL;DR

Fourteen casual Copenhagen places make a vegan or vegetarian meal easy, checked on 17 October 2026. Fully plant-based: Beyla, Café Kaf, Madenitaly and Vital Foods. Vegetarian-led, with vegan dishes marked: Absalon Folkehuset, Govinda, Kate's Joint and Morgenstedet. Mixed menus with a dependable meat-free main: 42RAW, Flavour Bastards, Gasoline Grill, Gaza Grill, GRØD and Slurp.

Six places list a meat-free main for 100 DKK or less, from 75 DKK. Two answers need a question at the counter: the Matr burger is vegetarian with no vegan mark, and the Veggie ramen turns vegan only without its egg. Dinner only: Govinda, Kate's Joint and Madenitaly.

What Does a Meat-Free Week Look Like at Copenhagen's Long Tables?

By 17:00 on a Thursday the long tables of Absalon Folkehuset, a former church on Sønder Boulevard, belong to ticket holders, and anyone without one tries the door. At 18:00 the whole hall eats the same dinner: on the menu for 12 to 18 October, a green pearl barley risotto with roasted portobello, a bean salad and plum compote, for 100 DKK.

Nobody there asks for the vegetarian option. Five of that week's seven dinners contain no meat, and the two chicken nights come with a vegetarian version of the same dish.

That is one end of the range. At the other sits the diner who needs a vegan main on a Tuesday, with the label printed on the menu. Between them are mixed kitchens with one dependable meat-free dish, from a burger to a bowl of ramen, and labels that shift from door to door: vegetarian can mean egg or cheese, and vegan can mean a kitchen that will not promise it.

Prices and hours below were read on 17 October 2026.

Which Counters and Cafés Serve a Quick Plant-Based Lunch?

42RAW, Pilestræde: why is the café named after a temperature?

42RAW opened in 2009 as the city's first raw food bar, and in 2013 it had no oven or stove: its food never passed 42 degrees in the dehydrators, which gave the café its name. It now cooks chicken and salmon too.

Vegan dishes carry VG on the menu. The Green Poké is 139 DKK and a burger with a plant patty or chicken is 149 DKK. It opens 08:00 to 20:00 on weekdays and 09:00 to 18:00 at weekends.

Café Kaf, Birkegade: where do you find a fully vegan pastry?

Café Kaf on Birkegade calls its food "comfort food ahead of its time", all made in house and 100% plant-based. Sourdough pastries and cutting cakes rotate with the season, with coffee from a local specialty roastery and seats under the oak trees. It opens 09:00 to 17:30 daily and suits a sweet stop after a savoury lunch.

Gasoline Grill: where does the vegetarian patty come from?

A Copenhagen start-up supplies it. MATR Foods began in 2021 and ferments five organic ingredients from Nordic farms with natural fungi spores: oats, split peas, lupins, beetroot and potatoes. By September 2023 MATR had partnered with Gasoline Grill to offer a meat-free patty on any burger on the menu.

Gasoline Grill grinds organic beef in house every day and lists Organic among four stated values, with Simplicity, Boldness and Quality. The Matr patty is organic too, and any burger can take it, so a beef-first counter runs one menu for both.

A cheeseburger with a Matr plant patty, melted cheddar, pickles and red onion in a glazed bun, with a second burger behind it
The Matr Burger at Gasoline Grill: a plant patty with melted cheddar, pickles and red onion.

The Matr Burger is Gasoline Grill's "Our Vegetarian Option", from 100 DKK for the burger on its own, and no burger carries a vegan mark, so a vegan diner should eat elsewhere in this list. The seasonal Green Burger of whole portobello is also 100 DKK but has no vegetarian label, so ask.

Landgreven 10 opens daily at 11:00 and serves until the burgers sell out, with no reservations and outdoor seats only. Carlsberg Byen has indoor seating.

Gaza Grill, Nørrebro: which falafel is marked vegan?

Gaza Grill asks every guest to eat a little less meat and try the falafel, and a mixed table can take it at its word. The Nørrebro room at Fælledvej 22 C is one of four and says it cooks organic Middle Eastern food from Palestinian family recipes, with bread made from Danish flour from Valsemøllen.

The falafel pita is 95 DKK and marked VE, and mezze plates are 75 DKK, with hummus, tahini salad and baba ganoush all VE. Falafel and fries fry separately in fresh rapeseed oil. Halloumi and labneh are vegetarian, the shawarma is meat, and hours are not listed, so check before you go.

GRØD, Jægersborggade: how did a bike shop basement become a porridge bar?

GRØD opened on 24 September 2011 in a 46 square metre basement on Jægersborggade that had been a bicycle shop. Its founder, Lasse Skjønning Andersen, spent his savings on the world's first porridge bar at 21, after finding that porridge can be savoury, as risotto, daal and congee.

The menu, ordered from 11:00, keeps that idea: Svampebygotto, a mushroom and barley risotto, is 109 DKK, and Rød daal, a red lentil porridge with skyr, is 99 DKK. Plant-based dishes carry P and options PO, and chicken shares the menu, so read the key. It opens 08:00 to 20:00 on weekdays and 09:00 to 20:00 at weekends.

Morgenstedet, Christiania: what does volunteer cooking taste like?

Christiania began in 1971 as a squatted military base, and Morgenstedet, at Fabriksområdet 134, is its organic vegetarian eatery, run for more than 20 years on volunteer labour. The chef on shift sets the cuisine, usually two hot dishes and several salads for under 100 DKK. You fetch your own cutlery and clear your own table, and opening days are not listed, so confirm them first.

Vital Foods, Kompagnistræde: which burrito is fully plant-based?

Vital Foods on Kompagnistræde cooks only plant-based food, and the team describes itself as "just some guys" who want to show plant-based food from a new angle. Burritos are 88 DKK, in black beans and sweet potato, mushroom mince with walnuts, or pulled jackfruit, and wraps and sandwiches are 74 DKK. It opens 09:00 to 19:00 on weekdays and 10:00 to 17:00 on Saturdays.

Where Can You Sit Down for a Vegan or Vegetarian Evening?

Absalon Folkehuset, Vesterbro: what is dinner in a former church like?

Absalon church went up in 1934 to designs by Arthur Wittmaack and Vilhelm Hvalsøe. After it stood empty, the Lajboschitz family, whose Lennart founded the Tiger chain, rebuilt it as a community house in 2015, with the artist Tal R colouring the hall. Before the conversion the echo lasted more than 11 seconds.

Dinner is at 18:00 every evening, 75 DKK from Sunday to Wednesday and 100 DKK from Thursday to Saturday, when the chef cooks two courses. Tickets sell online until 16:00 and at the door from 17:00, and unclaimed seats may go to people waiting after 17:45. Absalon can offer a vegetarian dish on meat days but cannot promise vegan food, or food free of milk or gluten, because its small kitchen also houses a bakery.

Beyla, Carlsberg Byen: how did a street-food stall become a plant-based eatery?

Beyla began as Souls, a street-food stall in Torvehallerne, and the Carlsberg Byen room opened on 20 October 2022 as the old Souls reopened under a new name. Founder Jason Renwick forages ingredients himself and owns the mushroom company Funga Farm, and mushrooms run through the menu.

In the evening the à la carte list has Beyla Fried Mushrooms with gochujang at 145 DKK and a Jerusalem artichoke risotto at 189 DKK, and the tasting menu is 399 DKK a person for the whole table. Weekends add a daytime menu from 10:00.

Booking is recommended on Friday and Saturday evenings, and a severe nut allergy that needs an EpiPen cannot be accommodated. The kitchen closes at 20:30 from Sunday to Thursday and at 21:00 on Friday and Saturday.

Flavour Bastards, Nørrebro: can a tasting menu be informal and vegan?

Ravnsborggade was laid out in 1852 and is still known for its antique shops, with cafés and restaurants between them. Flavour Bastards serves shared plates family style at number 12D: five courses for 235 DKK a person or seven for 335 DKK, both available vegan, with one menu for the whole table and a minimum of two people.

Courses run from whipped feta with roasted grapes to charred green beans in tomato sauce and, in the longer menu, sumac-roasted cauliflower on tahini. The kitchen runs 17:00 to 21:30 from Monday to Saturday.

Govinda, Vesterbro: which Indian thali is vegan?

Govinda, at Åboulevard 7, appears in ISKCON's directory of recognised centres. The weekly menu marks every dish from Tuesday to Saturday vegan, except one dish on Friday. A Lite Thali with two dishes of the day and rice costs 110 DKK and the Classic Thali adds chapati for 140 DKK, and the Taste of South India, with idli, masala vada, masala dosa and uthapam plus dessert, is 210 DKK. It opens Tuesday to Saturday from 17:00 to 21:30.

Kate's Joint, Nørrebro: where does home cooking meet a classic dhal?

Kate Kamil has been known on Nørrebro for more than 30 years for generous food and a classic dhal, and her family recipes now fill a cookbook sold at the restaurant on Blågårdsgade for 275 DKK.

The kitchen cooks Indian and Malay-style home food, specialising in vegetarian and vegan meals next to fish and meat, and most of the menu is naturally free of gluten. It opens 17:00 to 22:00, until 23:00 on Friday and Saturday, with the kitchen closing 30 to 40 minutes earlier and bookings for up to 8 people online.

Madenitaly, Kødbyen: what does fully vegan Italian look like?

Madenitaly began in 2014 as a pizzeria on Papirøen, opened a restaurant off Nyhavn in April 2018 and has cooked in H15 in Kødbyen since March 2025. It calls itself the first Italian vegan restaurant in Denmark.

Pizza al taglio comes by the slice, 75 DKK for one and 210 DKK for three, with toppings such as spicy jackfruit n'duja, and mains run from lasagna al forno at 190 DKK to spaghetti al nero with king oyster mushroom at 210 DKK. It opens Wednesday to Saturday from 17:00, the kitchen closes at 21:30, and tables are booked online.

Slurp, Nansensgade and Borgergade: what does a ramen kitchen do with vegetables?

Slurp has made ramen on Nansensgade since 2017, rolling the noodles each morning and simmering broths for hours, and the kitchen has cooked with wild greens from the start. For Noma's Vild Mad foraging festival that year it made green soba with nettle, and ramson, the wild garlic, has been on the menu in the asparagus salad, the pea and fava bean salad and the Unagi ramen's vinaigrette.

Both Slurp rooms serve the Veggie ramen at 175 DKK, covered in full below, and the vegetable cooking runs through the snack list. Slurp Borgergade serves Tofu Padrón Peppers at 95 DKK, charred peppers filled with creamy tofu and finished with a mushroom dashi reduction and lemon zest, and vegan. With the Veggie ramen ordered without its egg, they make a fully vegan meal.

Slurp Nansensgade adds Teriyaki Beetroot at 80 DKK, with sesame sauce, pickled ginger and furikake, also vegan. The Amazu Plate of pickled carrots, daikon and cucumber is 60 DKK and vegan in both rooms, and the Danish Onigiri with egg salad is vegetarian at 90 DKK.

Neither room takes reservations. Slurp Nansensgade has 22 seats, no toilets and opens 11:30 to 15:00 and 16:00 to 21:00, while Slurp Borgergade has 36 seats and opens 11:30 to 15:00 and 17:00 to 22:00. Orders stop at 14:45 for lunch, at 20:45 at Nansensgade and at 21:45 at Borgergade.

Where Can You Eat Meat-Free for 100 DKK or Less in 2026?

Six places list a meat-free main at 100 DKK or less, from a slice of vegan pizza to a seat at a shared dinner. The burger leads the table, and the other five run from the lowest price to the highest.

A vegan Tuesday at list prices, one main per meal and no drinks, costs 129 DKK for the 42RAW Acai Bowl, 88 DKK for a Vital Foods burrito and 140 DKK for the Govinda Classic Thali: 129 + 88 + 140 = 357 DKK.

How Do You Check a Menu Is Really Vegan or Vegetarian?

Denmark's official dietary advice says "Spis planterigt, varieret og ikke for meget", which means eat plant-rich, varied and not too much. Menus have followed, and the labels differ from room to room.

  1. Read the venue's own code. 42RAW uses VG, Gaza Grill uses VE, Govinda uses V and Veg, and GRØD uses P and PO.
  2. Ask about egg, dairy and fish. Slurp's Veggie ramen is vegan only without its egg, and Absalon cannot promise vegan food.
  3. Ask about gluten and allergens separately. Slurp cannot accommodate a gluten exclusion, and Vital Foods charges 20 DKK for bread without gluten.
  4. Check the day before you go. Café OHA is closed temporarily from 9 October 2026, with a return expected in two to three weeks, and Govinda, Kate's Joint and Madenitaly serve dinner only.

Can You Eat Vegan or Vegetarian Ramen at Slurp Without a Booking?

Yes. Both Slurp rooms take walk-ins and neither takes reservations, and each serves the Veggie ramen at 175 DKK: a mushroom and celeriac broth with oyster mushroom, tamago, kale, pickled fennel, red onion and lemon thyme. It is vegetarian as served and vegan without the egg. Slurp cannot accommodate a gluten exclusion.

Cooked noodles tipped from a steel mesh basket into a bowl of dark sauce, held by two hands, with tubs of chopped spring onion beside it
Cooked noodles go from a steel basket into a bowl in the Slurp kitchen.

Mushrooms and celeriac are not new to the kitchen. The cold ramen of 2017, by November the shop's nearest thing to an icon, came with a dipping sauce built on kombu, celeriac, fresh porcini and chanterelles, topped with grilled radicchio, mizuna, pickled enoki and a tamago, with organic seasonal vegetables from Kisselgården.

To order the Veggie vegan, ask for it without the egg, and mention any allergy when you order. The menu pairs the bowl with chilli crunch at 20 DKK and with Bancha, a late-spring roasted tea from Yamazoe in Nara with notes of dark chocolate and sweet tobacco and low caffeine, at 55 DKK. Nansensgade is the small, loud room, best for solos or small groups, and Borgergade has more space, with a short wait when it is busy.

Which Place Fits Which Meal?

For a quick vegan lunch with no booking, choose Vital Foods, the plant-patty burger at 42RAW or the falafel pita at Gaza Grill. For a vegetarian burger, order the Matr Burger at Gasoline Grill. For a hot vegan bowl in the middle of the city, ask for the Veggie ramen at Slurp without the egg.

For a longer evening, Madenitaly and Beyla cook fully plant-based menus, Govinda serves thalis from 17:00, and Flavour Bastards and Kate's Joint suit a table that includes meat-eaters. For the lowest price, Absalon at 75 DKK is the shared-table answer and Morgenstedet the volunteer-run one. Let food settle it: a thali for spice, a slice for thick, airy Roman dough, a patty for a burger, a bowl for broth.
