TL;DR

For weekday lunch in Copenhagen, choose Aamanns 1921 for seasonal smørrebrød, Smagsløget for a substantial sandwich, Hija de Sanchez Nordhavn for tacos, or Slurp for handmade noodles and chicken broth. Several choices start at 11:30; others open at noon. Stay nearby when lunch must fit around a fixed afternoon.

Updated 23 October 2026

The laptop is shut, your coat is over your arm, and lunch is the first thing today you get to choose for yourself. For weekday lunch in Copenhagen, start with the meal you want and the neighbourhood you're already in: rye bread and herring when you can linger, or one good hot dish when the afternoon is fixed.

That choice matters more than whether a restaurant is famous at dinner. A Danish frokost can become a leisurely meal of fish, pickles and another slice of rye. A sandwich, a plate from the grill or a bowl of noodles asks something different of your lunch break. The best choice is the one you actually have time to enjoy.

Which of these 15 weekday lunch spots fits your day in 2026?

A sit-down Danish lunch, a sandwich counter and a pizza restaurant can all make sense between 11:30 and 14:00. The useful difference is what you want to eat and when that kitchen starts. These are 15 separate locations, with Gasoline Grill and the two Slurp restaurants first, then the other places alphabetically, with ordinary weekday times checked on 23 October 2026. The two Slurp restaurants are counted separately because they are different addresses.

A noon opening is a reason to keep walking at 11:30, not to abandon lunch. Tuesday also rules out Selma. If the afternoon has already slipped past 14:00, use the lunch after 2pm choices, where later kitchen windows are the starting point.

Where does a proper Danish frokost belong in your day?

Give the meal more room when you want smørrebrød. The appeal is in the contrasts: soft rye under crisp fish, sharp herring against something creamy, warm meat beside pickles. You can eat one piece and leave, but a lunch built around two or three different tastes deserves your attention.

Which central tables reward a longer lunch?

In the centre, Schønnemann makes the traditional choice feel very clear. Down four steps at Hauser Plads 16, the informal lunch restaurant serves matured herring, breaded plaice and smoked eel with scrambled eggs. The eel and egg pairing is a richer direction than the pickled fish; decide by appetite rather than trying to sample everything. Its first sitting ends at 14:00, so arrive for the start of that meal, rather than treating the last few minutes as a fresh lunch window.

Aamanns 1921, at Niels Hemmingsens Gade 19-21, takes the same open-sandwich format towards seasonal vegetables. Beetroot comes with Vesterhavs cheese, buckwheat and tarragon; pumpkin comes with sage, brown butter and garlic chips. The lunch menu costs 395 DKK for two smørrebrød and dessert; choosing cheese adds 30 DKK. The high ceiling, handmade benches and old stone arches noted by Michelin give this longer lunch its setting. This autumn menu runs until 16 November, and lunch begins at 11:30.

For a more unusual herring preparation, Selma's rose hip herring brings pearl onion, crème fraîche and Mac Khen pepper to the rye. Confit chicken with corn, blackcurrant and verjus takes lunch in a sweeter, sharper direction. At Rømersgade 20, the kitchen's interest in seasonal produce gives you a reason to look beyond the most familiar Danish toppings. The small menu costs 460 DKK. Lunch runs from 11:30 to 16:00 on Wednesday through Monday, so choose somewhere else on Tuesday.

Where do the familiar Danish dishes shine?

The comfort-food choice is Kronborg, at Brolæggerstræde 12. Warm liver pâté with bacon, beetroot and mushrooms is a full-flavoured lunch; roast beef with crispy onions, remoulade, horseradish and cucumber gives a different balance of richness and crunch. This is classic Danish cooking in old-fashioned surroundings, useful when the sandwich itself is the reason for stopping. The weekday kitchen opens at 11:00, leaving room for an earlier start before the afternoon crowds your day.

Closer to Nyhavn, Told & Snaps is another deliberate lunch stop, at Toldbodgade 2. Choose matured pickled herring for acidity or hand-shelled prawns with homemade mayonnaise for something gentler. Homemade snaps are a feature here, with an organic base spirit and flavours that include walnut and horseradish, but the food gives you plenty to explore without one. Lunch starts at 11:30; the kitchen runs to 15:30 Monday to Thursday and 16:00 on Friday.

Across the water, Christianshavns Færgecafé gives Strandgade 50 a distinctly Danish lunch menu. The butter-fried fish fillet with remoulade and lemon costs 165 DKK. Mustard herring adds horseradish, capers and egg, while confit Jerusalem artichokes come with pickled mushrooms, artichoke chips and hollandaise. Those are three quite different lunches, despite sharing the same open-sandwich tradition. The weekday lunch kitchen runs from 11:30 to 15:30, so it fits a pause in Christianshavn without crossing back to the centre.

How do you keep lunch to one dish?

When the afternoon is fixed, choose a complete dish rather than assembling a long lunch around several courses. That still leaves room for food with character, whether you are in Vesterbro, north of the lakes or by the harbour. Eating by yourself also makes this a comfortable way to choose exactly what you feel like; there are more ideas in the solo dining guide.

Smagsløget Vesterbro, at Vesterbrogade 19, makes a substantial sandwich the whole meal. Roast pork comes with red cabbage and pickled cucumber; the house recommendation combines Danish ham, brie, bacon and homemade salsa. Both cost 115 DKK. Choose the pork for that familiar sweet-and-sour Danish combination, or ham and brie when cheese is what you really want. Weekday opening is from 09:00.

Further north, Kösk Kebab at Frederikssundsvej 23 brings charcoal cooking into the lunch break. Lamb shish can be a plate with bulgur, salad and hummus or tzatziki; falafel in durum comes with lettuce, onion, tomato and dressing. The choice is a hot grilled meal with a fork, or a filled wrap, rather than another variation on rye bread. It is a useful Nordvest option when you are already there. Weekday opening begins at 11:00.

A burger keeps lunch to one main without turning it into a snack. At Gasoline Grill, Købmagergade 23, the cheeseburger brings together organic beef, cheddar, red onion, pickles and Gasoline Grill sauce in a potato bun. The beef is ground in-house each morning, and the patties are formed by hand. Cheese and beef bring the richness; onion and pickles cut through it. This central restaurant opened in April 2025, with indoor and outdoor seating. Burgers start at 11:00 every day and finish when sold out, so it fits an ordinary lunch break without promising food at a fixed late hour. Choose the burger because that is the lunch you want, then check the queue against the afternoon ahead.

Would you rather have grains or tacos?

On Jægersborggade, GRØD opened its original porridge bar in 2011. At number 50, the lunch to consider is savoury: mushroom barley-otto with Gammel Knas cheese, pickled mushrooms, thyme and black pepper, at 109 DKK. The barley gives you something to chew, the cheese brings richness, and the pickled mushrooms cut across it. The savoury menu starts at 11:00, so this is a lunch choice even if porridge first makes you think of breakfast.

For tacos, head to Hija de Sanchez Nordhavn at Hamborg Plads 5. Opened in 2019, this location has a dining room, giving the taco lunch a different setting from a food-market stall. The founder, Rosio Sanchez, was previously Noma’s pastry chef. Order tacos according to the day's appetite, and leave space for churros if lunch can run to something sweet. The useful limit is simple: it starts at noon. This is a Nordhavn lunch, not a reason to cross the city with ten minutes left before an appointment.

What changes if you want pizza or barbecue?

A single dish can also be a reason to sit down for longer. Pizza and smoked meat bring a different kind of warmth to the middle of the day, particularly when a sandwich would feel like a compromise.

In Carlsberg Byen, SURT makes sourdough pizza with ancient grain varieties at Bag Elefanterne 2. Marinara keeps the topping to Siccagno tomato, garlic, oregano and olive oil; Margherita adds buffalo mozzarella and basil. Shrooms brings blue oyster mushrooms, garlic and seasonal herbs. The restaurant opens at noon, so it suits the later part of an ordinary lunch break, rather than an 11:30 start.

Warpigs, at Flæsketorvet 25-37 in Kødbyen, takes lunch towards Texas barbecue. A brisket sandwich costs 135 DKK; pulled pork is another sandwich option, while coleslaw and burnt-end baked beans let you build out a plate. Smoke and meat are the reason to come, rather than the idea that a brewpub belongs only to the evening. It opens at 11:30. Order a sandwich on its own, or add a side when lunch is the main meal of your day.

Where can you eat a weekday lunch at Slurp?

Slurp Nansensgade and Slurp Borgergade both serve lunch from 11:30, with last orders at 14:45 and the rooms closing at 15:00. At Slurp, we make noodles with Bornholm flour and adjust our broth and tare daily. Choose shoyu for chicken broth, pork neck chashu, egg and mushroom paste; add karaage when you want something crisp alongside.

The shoyu costs 185 DKK at both restaurants. Greens and garden sorrel bring contrast to the pork and egg. Preparation begins before lunch: we roll and cut the noodles each morning, and the broths simmer for hours. That work is why a simple bowl can be the meal you came out for.

Karaage chicken is the other lunch to know: deep-fried chicken with Japanese mayonnaise, at 120 DKK. The crisp coating gives you something very different from the noodles. For two people who each want a bowl and one plate of chicken to share, two shoyu plus one karaage comes to 490 DKK before drinks, using prices checked on 23 October 2026. That is an example order, not a set menu.

Slurp Nansensgade, at Nansensgade 90, is the smaller room, with 22 seats and no guest toilet. Slurp Borgergade, at Borgergade 16, has 36 seats. For a solo lunch, choose the room in your neighbourhood, and use the current Slurp menu to choose the food.

Stay nearby for the lunch you want

A good weekday lunch needn't become a project. Stay with herring and rye when a Danish table is what you came for; choose barley and mushrooms, tacos or a sandwich when one dish is enough. Slurp belongs in that decision when you want hot broth and noodles. Once the food is right, the sensible location is usually the one that leaves you time to eat it.
